RISE GROUNDED RESEARCH LIBRARY
Grounding Research
For more than two decades, published human research has explored
grounding across sleep, electrical measurement, physiology, mood
and physical recovery. This library links directly to the original
papers so you can read beyond the headlines.
Sleep & Stress
Grounded sleep, sleep quality and nighttime measures.
Electrical Grounding
Body voltage, charge exchange and measurable electrical effects.
Recovery & Wellbeing
Mood, physical recovery and related human outcomes.

01
SLEEP · 2025 RCT
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on
the improvement of sleep quality with Earthing mat
Park HJ et al. · Advances in Integrative Medicine · 2025
Sixty adults were randomized to a grounding or placebo mat for
31 days. Researchers used PSQI, ESS, BEPSI, ISI and actigraphy.
The grounding group showed improvements across multiple sleep
and stress measures, with total sleep time increasing versus control.

SLEEP
The biologic effects of grounding the human body during sleep
as measured by cortisol levels and subjective reporting
of sleep, pain, and stress
Ghaly M, Teplitz D · Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine · 2004
Twelve adults slept grounded for eight weeks in their own beds.
Researchers measured cortisol rhythm and tracked self-reported
sleep, pain and stress throughout the study.

ELECTRICAL GROUNDING
Effects of Grounding on Body Voltage and Current
in the Presence of Electromagnetic Fields
Brown R · Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine · 2016
In 50 participants, grounding reduced measured AC body voltage
by an average of 58-fold. Measured currents remained several
orders of magnitude below the accepted threshold of perception.

RECOVERY
Effectiveness of Grounded Sleeping on Recovery
After Intensive Eccentric Muscle Loading
Müller E et al. · Frontiers in Physiology · 2019
Twenty-two healthy participants were assigned to grounded
or sham-grounded sleeping during ten days of recovery after
intensive eccentric exercise. Researchers tracked soreness,
strength, performance and blood markers.

MORE HUMAN RESEARCH
Electrical measurement, mood, physiology & recovery
Additional published studies broaden the picture beyond sleep alone.
05
ELECTRICAL
Analysis of the charge exchange between the human body and ground:
evaluation of “earthing” from an electrical perspective
Chamberlin K et al. · Journal of Chiropractic Medicine · 2014
Researchers built sensitive instrumentation to directly measure
current flow between grounded human subjects and Earth. The measured
currents were small, in the nanoampere range.

MOOD
The effect of grounding the human body on mood
Chevalier G · Psychological Reports · 2015
Forty adults were grounded or sham-grounded while relaxing
for one hour in a double-blind pilot study. Positive and pleasant
mood measures improved more in the grounded group.

WELLBEING · RCT
The Effects of Grounding (Earthing) on Bodyworkers'
Pain and Overall Quality of Life: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Chevalier G et al. · Explore · 2019
Sixteen massage therapists took part in a six-week double-blind
randomized stepped-wedge trial. Researchers tracked physical
function, fatigue, mood, sleep disturbance and other wellbeing measures.

RECOVERY
Grounding after moderate eccentric contractions
reduces muscle damage
Brown R, Chevalier G, Hill M · Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine · 2015
Thirty-two healthy men were randomized to grounded or sham-grounded
conditions following eccentric exercise. Researchers measured pain,
creatine kinase and blood-count variables across four days.

PHYSIOLOGY
Changes in pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygenation,
perfusion index, skin conductance, and their variability
induced during and after grounding human subjects for 40 minutes
Chevalier G · Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine · 2010
Twenty-eight adults participated in double-blind grounded
and sham-grounded sessions while multiple physiological
parameters were continuously measured.

PHYSIOLOGY
Earthing the human body influences physiologic processes
Sokal K, Sokal P · Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine · 2011
A series of human experiments compared grounded and ungrounded
conditions while researchers measured a range of blood,
urine and physiological variables.

REVIEW
Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body
to the Earth's Surface Electrons
Chevalier G, Sinatra ST, Oschman JL, Sokal K, Sokal P · 2012
One of the most frequently cited early review papers,
bringing together electrical, physiological, sleep
and wellbeing-related grounding research.

REVIEW
The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation,
the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment
of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases
Oschman JL, Chevalier G, Brown R · Journal of Inflammation Research · 2015
A broader review discussing proposed mechanisms and published
grounding observations across inflammation, immune response
and wound-healing research.
